The National Cancer Institute is using cloud computing to help advance breast cancer research.

The agency worked with the Susan Love Research Foundation to start the Health of Women Study. The study aims to collect information on women across the U.S. (anyone can sign up) and then analyze it to understand the cause of the disease and ways to prevent it.

George Komatsoulis, acting chief information officer and the deputy director in the Center for Biomedical Informatics and IT at NCI, tells Federal News Radio’s Jason Miller the agency is using the cloud to collect the information on study participants.

Komatsoulis says the agency is also doing test deployments in the cloud. The agency has put its National Biomedical Image Archive in the Amazon EC2 cloud. He says the agency also plans to test some of the high-performance computing capabilities in EC2.
