Maryland’s seventeen military installations employ 3.4 percent of the state’s entire work force. They pay nearly $10 billion in wages a year and spend about $6.6 billion a year with other businesses throughout the state. The economic impact for 2008 adds up to $36 billion. The findings are detailed in a report by the University of Baltimore’s Jacob France Institute of the Merrick School of Business. The Washington Business Journal reports that the study offers a baseline for measuring how the defense industry directly impacts Maryland’s economy. It also shows how Maryland will benefit from BRAC, as tens of thousands of new jobs and residents will relocate from bases in New Jersey and Northern Virginia.
