Raytheon increases cybersecurity capabilities

The contractor joins the growing number of companies adding cybersecurity capabilities.

Raytheon is ready to pay $490 million for cybersecurity firm Applied Signal Technology. Applied Signal makes equipment that militaries and governments use to detect cyber threats. The Boston Herald reports the move expands Raytheon’s reach in the cybersecurity realm, adding products and services that gather and monitor intelligence. Experts believe defense deal activity is expected to heat up as the government shifts spending from weapons platforms to areas of unmanned war. The Applied Signal deal marks the largest purchase by Raytheon since CEO William Swanson took over in 2003.
