Time running out to fix GI Bill payments

Lawmakers continue to work on legislation that will guarantee veterans attending private colleges will have the same tuition payouts until they graduate. But, it could be weeks or more before the House and Senate reconcile their differences and pass the legislation, causing potential problems for students heading back to school at the end of the summer.
A Veterans Affairs official tells Stars and Stripes any change this late in the year could potentially disrupt all GI Bill payments.
In December, Congress changed the amount veterans attending private colleges can receive. The change means some veterans will be eligible for only a fraction of the amount they previously received, unless the new legislation is passed.
