The government’s top technology leaders have put agency chief information officers under the gun to close and consolidate federal data centers.

Just last week, the Office of Management and Budget and Federal CIO Steven Van Roekel updated the closure targets — and the definition of what constitutes a data center.

But the consolidation process is more than just jamming equipment from two or three data centers into one.

Doug Bourgeois, the former director of the Interior Department’s National Business Center, and now the chief cloud executive at software firm VMware, joined the Federal Drive with Tom Temin and Amy Morris to discuss the efforts.

He said the quick approach the government seems to be favoring may not be the best one.
