A data breach at the Utah Department of Health has left hundreds of thousands of Medicaid recipients and others vulnerable.

State officials said hackers stole more than 280,000 Social Security numbers. They took less-sensitive information from 500,000 other people. The victims are likely to be people who have visited a doctor in the past four months. Their health care providers all contacted the state to find out whether they were eligible for Medicaid or other public programs.

Utah officials are contacting possible victims by mail. They said the FBI is investigating the crime.
