The nearly endless armed conflicts, droughts and political warring in Africa sometimes sound like abstractions, but not to millions of people facing starvation in places like South Sudan. Last year the U.S. Agency for International Development sent $1.4 billion in emergency food aid to South Sudan, Somalia, Nigeria and nearby Yemen. This complicated and difficult task was led by Matthew Nims, acting director of the Office of Food for Peace at USAID. He’s also a finalist in this year’s Service to America Medals program and he joined Federal Drive with Tom Temin for more.
