GAO: DoD could improve on ability to respond to catastrophes

A recent report from the congressional watchdog says DoD needs to improve the way it plans to help civilian authorities in the wake of domestic disasters.

The Department of Defense, along with other federal agencies, faced a lot of criticism and scrutiny in the aftermath of their response to Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

Part of DoD’s overall mission is to support a civilian-military response in the wake of catastrophic domestic events.

Since Hurricane Katrina, the Government Accountability Office has been examining DoD’s capabilities to support civil authorities.

Davi D’Agostino is director of Defense capabilities and management issues at the congressional watchdog and explains the details of a recent report, which says there are still improvements to be made.
