The electronic health record system used by the Department of Veterans Affairs is getting a makeover. The VA recently announced it will spend $10.9 million to improve its Veterans Health Information Systems and Technology Architecture, otherwise known as “VistA.” VistA will be upgraded to meet HIPAA electronic transaction standards to allow third-party payments. The upgrades must be ready for testing by January of next year and be in production by January of 2012.
