May 20, 2010Army Lt. Gen. Jeff Sorenson has been in demand over the last year. Vendors want to know when the Army will release the requests for proposals for to buy data center services, and enterprise e-mail and messaging applications.

Sorenson also is popular with federal and military employees for his Apps for Army contest.

And then there is the Army’s Chief of Staff, George Casey, who wants Sorenson finalize the approach where commanders no longer have to bring their data with them into the field and can just access it through the Internet, or cloud.

Sorenson says the RFPs will be out in May, and he hopes awards will be made under both contracts by the fall.

The Apps for the Army contest, which asked servicemen and women and civilian employees to develop applications to improve current processes, closed May 15. Sorenson says a panel of experts will evaluate the 96 apps and cash awards to the winners in eight categories will be made in August.

The contest is one of several pilots that will eventually lead to a new acquisition decision memo changing the way the Army develops software.

As for the exercise to test cloud computing, Sorenson says is happening in May and the use of this approach in theater could come later this year.
