Expansion urged for State’s cybercrime powers

Lawmakers have urged President Obama to expand the State Department\'s cyber authority.

In the wake of the WikiLeaks scandal the president is facing new pressure to expand the State Department’s authority to address crime and security on the Internet, reports The Tech Herald New York Democratic Senator Kristin Gillibrand is calling on the president to launch a global effort to fight cyber crime. Gillibrand has joined with Utah Republican Senator Orin Hatch on a bill that would require the president to give Congress annual reports about online security around the world. The measure also aims to sanction countries that harbor cyber criminals.
