The House Oversight and Reform Committee passed a bipartisan bill Tuesday that would “ban the box” and prohibit federal agencies and contractors from asking a job applicant about their criminal history until after they’ve made a conditional employment offer.

Bipartisan support is growing for a proposed bill to remove barriers to federal employment for people with a criminal record.

More than 50 members of the House cosigned a letter asking President Obama to make the federal hiring process more accessible to Americans with criminal histories.
