Sgt. Zabi Abraham, center, an adviser with the 1st Security Force Assistance Brigade’s 5th Battalion, interprets a conversation between Lt. Col. Zachary Miller, right, the battalion commander, and an Afghan National Army officer near Kabul, Afghanistan, on Sept. 16, 2018. Abraham first served as a contractor to support Special Forces units before emigrating to the U.S. in 2013 and joining the Army as an active-duty interpreter two years later. He earned his citizenship and was stationed at Fort Irwin, California, where he and other interpreters helped rotational units at the National Training Center prepare for deployments. He is now stationed at the New Kabul Compound advising the brigade’s 5th Battalion.
