  • Roadside bombs have killed nearly 3,600 military service members and wounded 34,000 more in Iraq and Afghanistan, but many of the long-term health effects are unknown for those who seemingly walked away without serious injury. For that reason, the Institute of Medicine is calling on the Department of Veterans Affairs to create a registry of service members exposed to such bombs so the long-term consequences can be better tracked.

  • A Pentagon spokesman says that if any of the 65 Afghan militants who were released from a former U.S. prison return to the battlefield, U.S. forces might hunt them down. The Pentagon's press secretary, Navy Rear Adm. John Kirby, said Friday that the 65 are not considered targets at the moment.

  • Blue Button healthcare technologies are primed to explode in the private sector. Large pharmaceutical companies like Walgreens, CVS and other pharmicies in the National Association of Chain Drug Stores are planning to standardize their prescription data based on Blue Button policies. The technology was born at the Department of Veterans Affairs and have the reputation as an easy-to-use, easy-to-access healthcare facilitator. Blue Button and Blue Button Plus essentially serve as an online service to share and manage patient records and prescriptions. Right now the private sector plans to introduce their version next year. Healthcare IT News reports Walgreens is already offering online access to health data under the Blue Button brand.

  • The Marine Corps might switch to a private cloud to host its Global Combat Support System. Right now the system is controlled by the Defense Information Systems Agency. The Marine Corps says it wants to boost IT efficiencies, minimize risk, achieve performance objectives and reduce the total cost of ownership. The branch hopes a private cloud system can do all of that and more. The Marine Systems Command already has a request for information out to guage the feasability of a switch. The deadline to respond is pretty quick, though. Responses to the RFI are due by February 21st. The Marine Corps wants a single systems integrator to manage 15 different systems.

  • DoD, industry and Congress all acknowledged the need for new acquisition approaches for DoD's procurement of critical commercial satellite communications capabilities. Congress even included language to encourage DoD to use new acquisition models in the fiscal 2014 National Defense Authorization Act. DoD needs to reduce cost for these capabilities and to reduce the risk of not having sufficient SATCOM where and when DoD needs it. Panelists will talk about possible new approaches for DoD to buy commercial satellite services to meet mission needs around the world.

  • U.S. military officials said the number of American troops in Afghanistan could drop to as low as 20,000 by mid-summer, giving commanders the ability to pull them all out by the end of the year if no agreement is reached. It generally takes about 10 months to shut down a massive military base, but officials said the Pentagon is prepared to do it in a much shorter - although far more expensive - timeline.

  • A former Guatemalan special forces soldier was sentenced Monday to 10 years in a US prison for lying on his citizenship application. He lied about his participation in massacre that wiped out a village 30 years ago. Jorge Sosa, 55, was stripped of his American citizenship after being convicted of failing to disclose his alleged participation in the killing of at least 160 people in the village of Dos Erres.
