Ellen Herbst is the chief financial officer and assistant secretary for administration at the Commerce Department. She's also one of the newly elected NAPA fellows. Just in time for Veterans Day, the Merit Systems Protection Board has issued fresh guidance for federal managers on the topic of veterans hiring preferences. Two laws underpin the myriad of veterans preference regulations. Sharon Roth, a senior research analyst at the Merit Systems Protection Board, was the project manager of the report. It's no surprise that guarding against cyber threats is a priority for agencies. Data breaches at Homeland Security and a computer threat at the White House are just a few of many recent cyber attacks to hit the federal government. Agency officials say security policies are important but so is employee training. The Fort Meade Alliance surveyed government IT professionals and found more than 60 percent agreed cyber training should be a top priority.
