Foodie and the Beast – July 30, 2023

Hosted by David and Nycci Nellis.

On today’s show:

·        Spice n Nice is a local and woman-owned brand founded by Mariya Cherk and Risa Lin. The company bottles all-natural add-in coffee flavorings made from premium spices, flowers, and herbs. They have zero calories with no added sugars, and each bottle will flavor at least 50 cups of coffee;

·        As some of you may know, the word “jewfro’ commonly refers to a curly, bushy hairstyle worn by some Ashkenazi Jews. Ari Augenbaum and Nar Hovanian’s Richmond restaurant, Jew Fro, is not at all that — it’s a place where Jewish foods meet African flavors! It is a Jewish/African culinary journey through two robust cultures. JewFro is meant to educate your palate and encourage cultural exchange and appreciation through food;

·        Naples (Italy, not Florida) native Giulio Adriani is a seven-time World Pizza Champion who is the only pizzamaker ever awarded a green card from the United States government for achievements in the pizza business. Chef Giulio learned pizza-making from his Neopolitan nonna – his grammy – honed his craft in pizzerias in Naples and Rome and has opened Slice & Pie on 14th Street and Florida Avenue NW. It was recently named one of America’s Top 50 Pizza Restaurants. Chef Giulio joins us with the whole story – and a couple of slices!

·        D.C.’s own Jackie Greenbaum has brought a lot of fun and good food to the area’s dining scene for many years as co-owner of several popular restaurants, such as Bar Charley, the Quarry House Tavern and, now, the recently opened Charley Prime Foods in Gaithersburg.
