The Defense Department plans to cut back on contractors, but there are still questions about which contractors will be cut. The Government Accountability Office says that whole process needs some work. GAO auditors say the only way to see benefits from cutting back on contractors will be to know how many contractors the military has. The services all count contractors and awards differently. GAO says the Army’s approach was most accurate. The Navy misreported the number of its full time contractors. DOD had said that it would issue new reporting guidance to defense agencies by last August, but that still hasn’t happened.
