Applications are king.
Federal agency IT people spend a lot of time thinking about infrastructure and cybersecurity. They’re working hard on fulfilling complicated cloud strategies, while constantly adjusting monitoring and patching to keep networks and data safe. Yet when you think about it, the ultimate goal of all this work is to support the running of applications.
An IT irony is that for too many agencies, their infrastructure might be up to date but their methodologies for developing digital services and world-class internal applications remain stuck in old ways. And that leaves agencies with technical debt – the need to replace or update legacy applications – and no optimal path to the modern applications they need.
Enter low code programming. Coupled with an agile, incremental approach to development, it can yield fresh applications on a predictable schedule at low cost, letting IT departments avoid hiring squadrons of coders.
By speeding up development, low-code helps agencies reduce technical debt – the obsolescence and cost resulting from failing to keep up with changing technology.
In this video, Mike Beckley, the co-founder and chief technology officer of low-code pioneer Appian, explains in detail how the low-code approach enables modernization.
“It’s not coding so much as designing new applications,” Beckley says. It uses visual tools – drag-and-drop process modeling, point-and-click configuration of interfaces – so that not just coders and IT managers can understand what’s going on before anything is finalized. The visual low-code lets process and program owners, end users, and even finance and acquisition people contribute to application development.
Low-code doesn’t mean coding “lite”, though. Beckley emphasizes that low-code development is “about solving real industrial-strength problems,” such as running a government agency with millions of users.
Specifically for the federal market, Appian has solutions that incorporate the business rules specific to agencies. One example: Modules for acquisition systems that have the Federal Acquisition Regulation (FAR) and DFARS requirements built-in.
