You know what to expect when you walk into a post office. But what if you one day saw cell phones and bank tellers alongside the stamps and shipping boxes?
Postmaster General John Potter is asking Congress to let him restructure the agency so it can better compete and make up for plummeting mail volumes. Part of that, he says, includes thinking creatively.
Post offices in other countries sell insurance. And in some parts of Europe, you can renew your drivers license.
Potter is also pushing for the flexibility to tweak the length of the mail-week as business conditions warrant.
The Postal Service faces a projected $7 billion shortfall this year. The federal government’s fiscal year ends Sept. 30, 2009.
