DoD officials worry the militaries of other nations are quickly closing that gap.   • The first class of Marine trainees from the Energy Department\'s new solar job training program graduated earlier this year. It\'s called the Sunshot Initiative, and its goal is to train service members as solar panel installers and other solar industry related jobs. There are three military bases and more than 200 service members involved in the initiative. Minh Le, director of the Sunshot Initiative at the Energy Department talked about the ambitious goals of the program on the Federal Drive with Tom Temin.

  • The Defense Department is considering changing how much the agency subsidizes commissaries to save the agency money. But changing the subsidy level may mean fewer people use the commissaries and buy at regular stores instead. Craig Bond, economist is a professor at the Pardee RAND Graduate School. So both the House and Senate\'s plans keep DoD\'s budget within the caps set by the 2011 Budget Control Act and increase funds for overseas contingency operations. Tom Collina is director of policy for the Ploughshares Fund and former research director of the non-partisan Arms Control Association. On In Depth with Francis Rose, he said the OCO budget plans are just a political compromise and don\'t address the real issues confronting defense spending reform.
