  • Nicholas Lloyd Webber, the Grammy-nominated composer, record producer and eldest son of Andrew Lloyd Webber, died Saturday in England. He was 43 and had battled gastric cancer and pneumonia. Famed composer Andrew Lloyd Webber had been offering updates on Nick's health on social media in recent days. Nicholas died at a hospital in the south-central English town of Basingstoke, his father said. The senior Webber missed the Broadway opening Thursday of his “Bad Cinderella” to be at his son’s side with other loved ones. Nicholas is best known for his work on the BBC One’s “Love, Lies and Records.” He also worked on his father’s 2021 “Cinderella,” earning a Grammy nod for best musical theater album.

  • Xavier López, a Mexican children's comic better known by his stage name, “Chabelo,” has died at 88. Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador wrote in his Twitter account that his own eldest son “woke up early to see him (on television more than 40 years ago.” López, who was no relation to the president, usually performed dressed in kid's clothing well into his 70s. His best-known work, the Sunday variety show “En Familia con Chabelo”, ran an astonishing 48 years from 1967 to 2015. The comic’s family wrote on his fan page that López “died suddenly on abdominal complications.”

  • A federal judge has sided with four publishers who sued an online archive over its scanning of millions of copyrighted works and offering them for free to the public. Judge John G. Koeltl of U.S. District Court in Manhattan ruled that the Internet Archive was producing “derivative” works that required permission of the copyright holder. The Archive was not transforming the books in question into something new, but simply scanning them and lending them as ebooks from its web site. “An ebook recast from a print book is a paradigmatic example of a derivative work,” Koeltl wrote.

  • A name paired with poker and Las Vegas lore now has a place on the neon-lit Strip. Caesars Entertainment on Friday marked the rebranding of its Bally's Las Vegas as the Horseshoe Las Vegas Hotel & Casino. The 2,800-room property once was the MGM Grand Hotel, where a historic fire in 1980 killed 87 people. Then it was Bally’s Las Vegas for 36 years. The name change comes ahead of the 54th World Series of Poker, which the property will again host beginning in late May. Last year, the tournament drew nearly 200,000 players and awarded almost $350 million in prizes.

  • Walter Cole, known as the iconic drag queen who performed for decades as Darcelle XV, has died at 92. Cole died of natural causes in Portland, Oregon, on Thursday. Cole was crowned the world’s oldest working drag performer in 2016 by the Guinness Book of World Records. Darcelle was known for hosting the longest-running drag show on the U.S. West Coast. Off-stage, Cole championed LGBTQ+ rights and charitable work in the Portland community. The nightclub Darcelle founded more than 50 years ago said on Facebook that its shows will go on as scheduled.

  • Gwyneth Paltrow has testified about a 2016 ski collision at a Utah ski resort where a man is suing her, saying he's since suffered from broken ribs and brain damage. Paltrow says Friday that the 76-year-old Utah man is the culprit for the collision at Deer Valley Resort in Park City, and her legal team has raised questions about the man's motivations to bring a suit that could exploit her fame. After a judge threw out an earlier $3.1 million dollar lawsuit, the man is now seeking at least $300,000. In a counterclaim, Paltrow is seeking a symbolic $1 and attorney fees.

  • For years skateboarding was branded as a hobby for rebels or stoners in city streets, schoolyards and back alleys. Those days are long gone. Skateboarding, which has Indigenous roots connected to surfing, is an Olympic sport and boasts numerous competitions across the U.S and abroad. And on Friday, the U.S. Postal Service is issuing stamps that laud the sport — and what Indigenous groups have brought to the skating culture. The agency ceremoniously unveiled the “Art of the Skateboard" stamps at a Phoenix skate park, featuring designs from Indigenous artists. The stamps underscore the prevalence of skateboarding, especially in Indian Country where the demand for skate parks is growing.
