  • The House Judiciary Committee passed an updated USA Freedom Act a few weeks ago. Many see the surveillance bill as a compromise that gives a little to each side, including limiting the use of Section 215 of the Patriot Act. That\'s the provision that lets intelligence agencies collect telephone records. Sean Vitka is a federal policy manager at the Sunlight Foundation. He joined Tom Temin on the Federal Drive to explain what else is in the bill, and what it could all mean.

  • The Coast Guard unveiled a new cybersecurity strategy earlier this month. It doesn\'t just focus on protecting Coast Guard networks and systems. It also includes the country\'s 3,600 ports. That\'s because so many ports are nearly fully automated, and therefore vulnerable to cyber attacks. Capt. Andrew Tucci is the chief of the Coast Guard\'s Office of Port and Facility Compliance. On the Federal Drive with Tom Temin, he said cyber attacks comprise the fastest growing risk, even at the ports.

  • The House passes the first spending bill of the year to fund military pay and benefits programs, and to pay for DoD\'s housing and equipment infrastructure. The Military Construction and Veterans Affairs bill is usually one of the easiest appropriations bills to pass, but this year it drew far less support than usual. Tamar Hallerman is appropriations reporter for Roll Call. On In Depth with Francis Rose, she said the lack of support could signal a overall tough appropriations process this year.

  • The White House endorses 10 of the 15 recommendations the Military Compensation and Retirement Modernization Commission made in its report in January. The House Armed Services Committee included several of those recommendations in their markup of the National Defense Authorization Act. Dov Zakheim was a member of the Comp commission, former Under Secretary of Defense (Comptroller), and now a senior adviser at the Center for Strategic and International Studies.
