  • The Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum has given its highest award to NASA\'s Kepler mission team. The 2015 Trophy for Current Achievement honors outstanding work in aerospace science and technology. Kepler was the first to detect Earth-sized planets orbiting other stars at distances such that those planets might harbor life. Since its launch in March 2009, Kepler has discovered more than 4,000 of these exoplanets. Dr. Steve Howell, a Kepler Mission scientist at NASA Ames Research Center, joined Tom Temin on the Federal Drive with more on this work.

  • Online security and online access for people with disabilities have collided. Many of the most common Web practices for ensuring a user is actually human can be very difficult to use if you\'ve got a disability. For example, Techniques like CAPTCHA, which requires users to type in a distorted word or symbol, can be impossible for the blind. To remedy that, the General Services Administration\'s 18F tech team recently held an \"Accessibility Hackathon.\" They want to find a way to keep dot-gov sites secure and make them more accessible. Nick Bristow is an 18F innovation specialist working on this problem. He joined Tom Temin on the Federal Drive to explain some of the team\'s ideas.

  • A number of changes to USASpending.gov took effect on April 1, and they\'ve already got people irked. The site is supposed to provide easy public access to data on federal contracts, grants and financial assistance. Treasury Fiscal Assistant Secretary David Lebryk says in a blog post that the changes were supposed to help improve site navigation, and make the data it tracks easier to understand. Hudson Hollister, executive director of the Data Transparency Coalition, joined Tom Temin on the Federal Drive to analyze the site changes and the blowback they\'ve already generated.

  • The Navy\'s cyber command has reached the grand old age of five. To celebrate, it\'s finalizing a new strategy. The new document outlines the concept of integrating the cyber domain into the broader warfighter domain. So both the House and Senate\'s plans keep DoD\'s budget within the caps set by the 2011 Budget Control Act and increase funds for overseas contingency operations. Tom Collina is director of policy for the Ploughshares Fund and former research director of the non-partisan Arms Control Association. On In Depth with Francis Rose, he said the OCO budget plans are just a political compromise and don\'t address the real issues confronting defense spending reform.

That\'s enabled the agency to detect and prevent a lot of fraud and abuse. The application has gotten some attention. It was one of 30 finalists for ACT-IAC\'s 2015 \"Igniting Innovation\" awards.
