The massive mudslide in Washington State is the most recent example of the need for resilience in the face of disaster. The National Institutes of Standards and Technology is launching the Disaster Resilience Initiative. It will help communities recover from the aftermath of natural disasters such as the mudslide or Superstorm Sandy, which struck New York and New Jersey in 2012.
