DoD website tracks contractor R&D spending

The Defense Department says it used to have a pretty good understanding of where defense contractors were spending their independent research and development, or “IR&D” dollars. Now, not so much.
To fix that problem, DoD has issued new rules that will require its bigger contractors to submit basic information about their R&D activities through a secure website called the Defense Innovation Portal.
The rules apply to contractors who claim more than $11 million in a year on IR&D and bid and proposal costs, according to a DoD statement.
Ronald Kurjanowicz, director of strategy for defense research and engineering in the Office of the Undersecretary of Defense for Acquisition, Technology and Logistics, talked with Federal News Radio’s Jared Serbu and Jason Miller about how DoD hopes the rules will help DoD do a better job of leveraging industry’s capabilities.
