Study: More managers than ever worry about cyber threats

Cybersecurity Update – Tune in weekdays at 30 minutes past the hour for the latest cybersecurity news on The Federal Drive with Tom Temin and Amy Morris (6-10 a.m.) and DorobekInsider with Chris Dorobek (3-5 p.m.). netForensics study finds 80 percent of IT managers expect network-borne threats to increase in the next year. And even more troubling, more than half of managers say their organization wasn’t budgeting or recruiting enough new talent to counter the added threats. With almost 25 percent of respondents saying they saw a decrease in staff size in the last year. But there is some good news. The study found that more than half of the mangers polled said their organization was more secure today than a year ago.

The White House is one step closer to making it’s promise to secure the internet a reality. They have unveiled the first draft of the National Strategy for Trusted Identities in cyberspace. The draft is a blueprint to reduce cybersecurity risks and improve online privacy protections by using trusted digital identities. Eventually consumers will be able to get a secure interoperable, and privacy-enhancing credential. Like a smart identity card or digital certificate so that they can authenticate themselves online. The draft is also pushing for the online environment to be more user-centric – that means you, as a user, will be able to have more control of the private information you use to authenticate yourself on-line. The Department of Homeland Security is one of the many agencies who helped create the draft. And now they want to know what you think, they have opened up a comment board on their website.
