June 5th is the deadline for cloud vendors to prove they can meet federal security standards. The soft deadline for cloud vendors that want to qualify is actually right about now. The General Services Administration says it takes almost six months for a company to earn approval from the Federal Risk and Authorization Management Program, or FedRAMP. That’s if a company decides to earn the qualification on its own. The Federal Times reports it takes about four and a half months to pass through a review by a federal agency. FedRAMP director, Maria Roat, says companies with a smaller federal footprint are likely better off working with agencies directly to earn a certification. FedRAMP relies on about 300 different security controls based on guidelines from the National Institute of Standards and Technology.
