  • Homeland Security is losing its chief human capital officer. Jeff Neal will retire after 31 years in government on August 3rd. Over the last few years Neal has been a leader in taking on hiring reform.
  • Small businesses got almost $98 billion in government contracts in 2010. The Small Business Administration today issued its annual report on small business contracting, which showed agencies awarded 22.7 percent of their contracts to small firms. This is just shy of the 23 percent government-wide goal.
  • One in five government cars and trucks would disappear under a proposal to cut the federal fleet. A bill introduced by Senators Tom Coburn and Jeane Shaheen would reduce federal fleet spending by $500 million. The U.S. spends about $4.6 billion annually to keep more 662,000 vehicles on the road.
  • Today is your last day to pick up long term care insurance before the process gets harder. The advantage of the open season for federal employees and spouses is being able to use an abbreviated application form. Registered employee benefit consultant Ed Zurndorfer says this is a golden opportunity to apply for the program, especially for anyone with health problems.
