  • Homeland Security has pulled the plug on its Next Generation Radiation Detectors. The project is being canceled because of what the agency calls “significant” technical issues. Gov Exec reports DHS has spent $230 million over five years to set up and use the monitor system.
  • The official close of Walter Reed Army Medical Center is today. The hospital’s operations are moving to the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda as part of Base Realignment and Closure. The State Department and the District of Columbia will use the campus after the move is complete.
  • Benefits from your federal workers’ compensation program may be shrinking. Representatives of federal employee groups told a Senate Homeland Security subcommittee yesterday that a bill from Senator Susan Collins of Maine, and a Labor Department proposal, would both give workers less money than they get now if they can’t work. Subcommittee Chairman Daniel Akaka says the program hasn’t been significantly updated in 40 years.
