Senators Tom Carper (D-Del.) and Roy Blunt (R-Mo.) have proposed a bill that would require agencies to safeguard private information and to tell people if there information was hacked.

Sen. Diane Feinstein (D-Cal.) has also proposed a bill requiring businesses to tell people if there information was illegally obtained.

Next Gov reports that Feinstein says it is past time for Congress to pass a national breach notification standard to ensure that consumers are notified when their information is exposed so they can take the necessary steps to protect themselves.
