As the new federal chief information officer, Steven VanRoekel isn’t expected to radically change the administration’s focus on information technology. VanRoekel takes over for outgoing federal chief information officer Vivek Kundra on August 13. Federal News Radio’s Jason Miller brings us details on his plans and why VanRoekel is replacing Kundra.

The Office of Personnel Management has released details of the new Pathways programs aimed at getting more young people into government. OPM’s proposed regulation would make it easier for agencies to bypass normal hiring procedures… and recruit students and recent graduates for short-term positions that could be converted to regular civil service jobs. Rob Shriver is the senior policy counsel at OPM. He tells Federal News Radio’s Emily Kopp that the government needs the Pathways program to be a competitive employer.

In his first news conference as Defense secretary, Leon Panetta told reporters the military could handle the initial round cuts that this week’s debt reduction deal would call for. But the agreement would take another 500-billion from DoD if Congress can’t come up with ways to cut the budget elsewhere. That, Panetta says, would be completely unacceptable.
