NOAA is making changes as it moves into the 21st century.

In a press release on Thursday, officials said they are going to modernize marine operations by replacing nine research ships and refurbishing a tenth in the next 15 years.

NOAA’s Office of Marine and Aviation Operations looked at the 19 ships currently in the fleet and determined that 10 would reach the end of their service lives during the next 15 years.

The new plan will systematically replace or upgrade the fleet.

The fleet supports a wide range of marine activities, including fisheries and coastal research, nautical charting, and long-range ocean and climate studies.
