These are the stories Federal News Radio reporters are working on today.

  • You need a bunch of things when you retire. Federal News Radio Senior Correspondent Mike Causey is writing about some of them in his column today…and the list is REALLY comprehensive. Stuff like high-water mark pants, and big floppy tennis hats.
  • The Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee is trying to do some minor house cleaning at the Homeland Security Department. Lawmakers want to eliminate and consolidate DHS offices and improve management functions as part of the first ever DHS Authorization bill. Federal News Radio’s Jason Miller attended part one of the committee’s markup today and brings us details.
  • The intelligence community says it has become more effective at sharing information since the September 11 attacks. It has created new coordinating positions and offices. Now as budgets grow tighter, Director of National Intelligence James Clapper tells Federal News Radio reporter Emily Kopp he’ll work to maintain integration and a skilled workforce.
  • As part of the efficiency initiatives launched by former Defense secretary Robert Gates, DoD has already eliminated more than 100 positions for generals and admirals. But some members of Congress are concerned that the Pentagon is still too top heavy. WFED’s Jared Serbu has highlights from the Senate Armed Services committee testimony on the issue today.
