Cybersecurity legislation may not be dead after all. Democratic Senator Jay Rockefeller is offering his cyber bill as an amendment to the Defense Authorization bill. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and Armed Services Chairman Carl Levin both support the amendment, according to The Hill newspaper. The bill was approved unanimously by the Commerce Committee in July but has stalled in the Senate since then. If passed into law, the legislation calls for a voluntary public-private partnership to improve cybersecurity. It also provides for cyber research, workforce development, and education. While passing cyber legislation has been difficult in Congress, President Barack Obama issued an executive order in February calling for the establishment of a cybersecurity framework.
