Birthday boy Judge, Severino carry Yankees past Red Sox, 3-1

BOSTON (AP) — Luis Severino pitched seven innings of three-hit, shutout ball and Aaron Judge celebrated his 25th birthday with a two-run homer and spectacular catch, carrying the surging New York Yankees to a 3-1 victory over the Boston Red Sox on Wednesday night in the longtime rivals’ first meeting this season.

It was the 11th win in 14 games for the Yankees after they opened the season 1-4.

Severino struck out six and walked two, posting his third straight strong start. In his previous two, the 23-year-old righty became just the third Yankee ever to post double-digit strikeouts without more than one walk in consecutive games.

Reigning AL Cy Young winner Rick Porcello lost his third straight start, giving up three runs — two earned — in 6 2/3 innings. He didn’t lose consecutive starts last season.

Other MLB final scores:

— James Paxton struck out nine in seven outstanding innings, and Nelson Cruz and Guillermo Heredia homered to lift the Seattle Mariners to an 8-0 victory over the Detroit Tigers. Paxton allowed four hits and a walk in a dominant performance against a Detroit team that had scored 32 runs over its previous two games.

— Avisail Garcia and Leury Garcia homered to back run-starved starter Jose Quintana and the Chicago White Sox beat the Kansas City Royals 5-2 on Wednesday to complete a three-game sweep. Chicago won its fourth straight, while Kansas City dropped every game on a seven-game trip.

— Michael Brantley, continuing his comeback from shoulder problems that forced him to miss most of last season, drove in three runs and the Cleveland Indians defeated the Houston Astros 7-6 on Wednesday night. The Indians have won six of eight.

— Gift Ngoepe, the first African to reach the major leagues, singled in his first plate appearance and Josh Harrison led off the bottom of the first with a home run Wednesday night to lead the Pittsburgh Pirates to a 6-5 victory over the Chicago Cubs. Ngoepe was recalled from Triple-A Indianapolis and entered the game in fourth inning.

— Julio Teheran stifled the Mets into the seventh inning, Robert Gsellman staggered through a five-run first and the Atlanta Braves handed New York its fifth straight loss, 8-2 on Wednesday night. Atlanta ended a six-game skid behind 6 1/3 innings of two-run ball from Teheran.

— Major League home run leader Eric Thames scored twice before leaving with an injury and Orlando Arcia homered and had three RBIs, leading the Milwaukee Brewers to a 9-4 win over the Cincinnati Reds on Wednesday to complete a three-game sweep.

—Maikel Franco hit his second grand slam of the month, helping the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Miami Marlins 7-4 on Wednesday night for their fifth straight win. Franco connected off Wei-Yen Chen in the third inning with a shot to left-center for a 4-2 lead.

— The St. Louis Cardinals’ game against the Toronto Blue Jays was postponed because of rain on Wednesday. The game has been rescheduled as part of a day-night doubleheader on Thursday.

In other baseball news:

— Red Sox reliever Matt Barnes is dropping his appeal of a four-game suspension for throwing behind the head of Baltimore’s Manny Machado and began serving it Wednesday night. Barnes was suspended and fined Monday.

—Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia sat out Wednesday’s game against the Yankees with a sore left knee, his third straight since the Orioles’ Manny Machado slid into the back of his leg.

— Houston Astros second baseman Jose Altuve (al-TOO’-vay) was out of the starting lineup Wednesday, a day after colliding with a teammate in the outfield. Manager A.J. Hinch says Altuve banged up his left shoulder.

— The New York Mets pushed back Noah Syndergaard’s turn in the rotation by a day, and Robert Gsellman started Wednesday night against the Atlanta Braves in his place.

— The Seattle Mariners have put Felix Hernandez on the 10-day disabled list with right shoulder inflammation.

— Giants leadoff hitter Denard Span suffered a setback in his recovery from a shoulder injury and was placed on the 10-day disabled list Wednesday.

— The Washington Nationals placed reliever Koda Glover on the 10-day disabled list with a left hip impingement. The team has recalled left-hander Matt Grace from Triple-A Syracuse to take his place.

NHL-JACK ADAMS FINALISTS

Jack Adams Finalists

NEW YORK (AP) — Toronto’s Mike Babcock, Edmonton’s Todd McLellan and Columbus’ John Tortorella are the finalists for the Jack Adams Award as the NHL coach of the year.

Members of the NHL Broadcasters’ Association voted at the end of the regular season, with the top three designated finalists Wednesday. The winner will be announced June 21 at the NHL Awards in Las Vegas.

The award honors the late Jack Adams, the longtime coach and general manager of the Detroit Red Wings.

In other NHL news:

—Dallas Stars forward Tyler Seguin (SAY’-gihn) has had surgery to repair the labrum in his right shoulder and should be ready for training camp in September. The team says he is expected to make a full recovery in four months.

— The Vancouver Canucks have named Travis Green their new coach. Green spent the last four seasons coaching the Canucks’ top farm team, the Utica Comets of the American Hockey League. He replaces Willie Desjardins, who was fired after three seasons in Vancouver.

— The Boston Bruins are bringing Bruce Cassidy back as coach. Cassidy replaced Claude Julien in February and as interim coach helped the team return to the playoffs for the first time in three seasons. The Bruins lost to the Ottawa Senators in six games in the first round of the playoffs.

—The Buffalo Sabres have signed prospect defenseman Devante Stephens to a three-year entry-level contract. The Sabres made the signing despite working without a general manager after Tim Murray and coach Dan Bylsma were fired last week.

NBA PLAYOFFS-HAWKS-WIZARDS

Home, sweet home: Beal, Wall lead Wizards past Hawks, 103-99

WASHINGTON (AP) — Back at home, and back in charge, Bradley Beal scored 27 points, and John Wall added 20 points and 14 assists, leading the Washington Wizards to a 103-99 victory over the Atlanta Hawks on Wednesday night for a 3-2 lead in their first-round Eastern Conference playoff series.

Dennis Schroder led the Hawks with 29 points, making a career high-tying five 3s, and 11 assists. But after his basket from beyond the arc pulled Atlanta within 101-99 with 70 seconds left, Wall responded with a 21-foot pull-up jumper.

A miss followed from Paul Millsap, who had 21 points and 11 rebounds, but after Wall’s jumper was off the mark, the Hawks seemed to waste too much time at the other end and the buzzer sounded.

In other NBA news:

— Golden State Warriors general manager Bob Myers fully expects Steve Kerr to find a solution to his debilitating health issues and be back on the bench without being forced out of coaching altogether because of complications from two back surgeries. The 51-year-old Kerr plans to be examined at Stanford this week. He didn’t coach the Warriors in Games 3 and 4 at Portland last week while dealing with extremely uncomfortable symptoms

— Houston Rockets owner Leslie Alexander has been fined $100,000 by the NBA for confronting a referee during live game action. The incident occurred Tuesday in the final minute of the first quarter during the Rockets’ 105-99 victory over the Oklahoma City Thunder.

— Cleveland officials have committed the final chunk of financing for $140 million in upgrades planned at the Cavaliers’ home arena. The makeover of Quicken Loans Arena would include more space for dining and gathering.

Syracuse Orange inks Canadian small forward Oshae Brissett

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) — Syracuse has signed Canadian high school star forward Oshae Brissett to a national letter of intent to play for the Orange next season.

The 6-foot-8, 195-pound Brissett, of Mississauga, Ontario, is rated as a three-star recruit in the Class of 2017 by 247Sports.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL-LOUISIANA-LAFAYETTE-ARRESTS

13 Louisiana-Lafayette players arrested, suspended

LAFAYETTE, La. (AP) — Louisiana-Lafayette has indefinitely suspended 13 players facing charges of criminal conspiracy to commit felony theft.

School officials say they were suspended “for a violation of team rules” without providing more detail.

University of Louisiana-Lafayette police said Tuesday the 13 students went to a dorm room April 5 and took several items worth a total of about $2,400. Police say the students were identified through video surveillance.

NFL-RAIDERS-LYNCH

Raiders bring RB Marshawn Lynch out of retirement

ALAMEDA, Calif. (AP) — Marshawn Lynch is coming out of retirement after agreeing on a two-year deal with the Raiders that paved the way for a trade to his hometown team in Oakland.

Lynch passed a physical Wednesday and agreed to a restructured two-year contract. Those were the final steps needed before Seattle could trade his rights along with a 2018 sixth-round pick to the Raiders for a 2018 fifth-rounder.

Lynch also must apply to the NFL for reinstatement from the retired list before he can play.

In other NFL moves:

— The New York Jets have waived running back Brandon Burks, wide receiver Darius Jennings, long snapper Josh Latham, linebacker Jeff Luc and defensive lineman Julien Obioha. The team is trimming its roster on the eve of the NFL draft. The Jets, who have 76 players under contract, have seven picks in the draft — including No. 6 overall.

— The Green Bay Packers have signed veteran offensive lineman Jahri Evans as they look to fill a hole up front left by the departure of free agent-right guard T.J. Lang.
