The U.S. Army wants to know how it compares to its allies and enemies so it can determine which of its fielded systems are performing comparatively well and what needs to get better. To conduct that analysis, leaders turned to the RAND corporation, which had the challenge of assessing the world's armies based entirely on open-source information — and distilling it all into a detailed, but unclassified report. John Gordon is a senior policy analyst at RAND, and one of the authors of that report: Comparing U.S. Army Systems with Foreign Counterparts. He tells In Depth guest host Jared Serbu, what the study found, and what the Army wants to get out of it.

Agencies now have 30 days to sprint to new cybersecurity standards after multiple data breaches at the Office of Personnel Management. But some chief information security officers say they are more concerned about what impact a cyber attack will have on their organization\'s reputation than the data itself that\'s at risk. That\'s according to a new report from the RAND Corporation, \"The Defender\'s Dilemma: Charting a Course Toward Cybersecurity.\" Martin Libicki, a senior management scientist and professor at the Pardee RAND Graduate School, is a co-author of the report. The My Career Advancement Account is designed to help military spouses further their education, and secure better employment. But a new study shows only one in five spouses uses the program. Over the past few years, there's been no shortage of frightening assessments warning the U.S. faces a serious shortage of qualified cybersecurity professionals. But a brand new report from the RAND corporation offers a fresh take. After an exhaustive review of existing literature and interviews with cyber experts, researchers concluded the situation right now is pretty dire, particularly in the federal government. But there's also cause for optimism. Both the public and private sectors have already begun to respond to the shortage, and the problem may eventually solve itself.
