The military is under orders to let female service members serve in combat positions. Earlier this year, then Defense Secretary Leon Panetta lifted a long-standing ban. Tom and Emily spoke with Navy Capt. Erich Diehl, the Commanding Officer of Coastal Riverine Group 2 and the person ultimately responsible for ensuring female sailors are placed in some of the most dangerous roles.

A billion dollar program to spot suspicious behavior at airports is a waste, according to a new report by the Government Accountability Office. GAO says results of the Transportation Security Administration’s behavior-screening techniques are no better than chance. Steve Lord, director of Homeland Security and Justice Issues at GAO, wrote the report. He joined Tom and Emily to discuss the details.

Two months after the Pentagon ordered all corners of the Defense Department to draft plans to migrate email systems to DoD’s centralized system, some military services are holding out. Federal News Radio DoD Reporter Jared Serbu says the Navy and Marine Corps aren’t willing to commit to making the move.
