BBC News releases malware… on purpose

Cybersecurity Update – Tune in weekdays at 30 minutes past the hour for the latest cybersecurity news on the Federal Drive with Tom Temin and Amy Morris (6-10 a.m.) and the DorobekINSIDER with Chris Dorobek (3-7 p.m.). G-Hacks.net reports the malware takes the form of a game, but it actually spies on the smartphone owner. It gathers contacts, text messages and the phones’ location…then sends all the information to a specific email address. The BBC says the malware was built using standard software toolkits, which makes it much harder to spot.

With all of the noise about cloud computing, data center consolidation and transparent government, you could almost forget the government is under mandate to make sure networks incorporate IPv6 — the new internet protocol that gives all sorts of security benefits. In a press release, Qwest Communications says not only is there plenty of room in the IPv6 pool, next-generation security is baked in.
