The Federal News Radio United Way Community Spotlight for June is the Foundation for the Advancement of Music & Education, Inc. (FAME).

FAME is a local nonprofit dedicated to providing equal access to all children and young adults, regardless of social and economic need, to quality music and music education as part of their lifelong journey to adulthood.

Founded in 2004 by A. Toni Lewis, FAME seeks out and creates opportunities for young people to positively express culture through musicianship, vocals, visual art, humanities and performance theatre.

FAME’s programs fill the void where in-school and after-school cultural arts programs have been drastically reduced or eliminated; and support families who have been adversely affected by the ongoing economic crises. Our goals are to increase students’ enthusiasm for learning and academic levels, reduce the dropout rate of at-risk and low income youth and provide exposure outside community walls.

FAME programs include: 1. Master classes, workshops, and seminars 2. Partnerships with school music departments 3. After School Music programs 4. Family Literacy 5. Music Technology and Academic training 6. Scholarships and tuition assistance

Through donations for the community, FAME is able to donate new and used instruments to youth. If you would like to donate an instrument that you no longer need, please Email: info@fameorg.org Or call us 301-805-5358.

Our annual flagship community event, Bridging the Musical Spectrum, is presented annually in the Dekelboum Concert Hall at Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center at the University of Maryland College Park. The event includes music from several music genres performed by students of all ages accompanied by professional musicians and recording artists. The 2012 event is scheduled for October 13th.
