With Congress failing to agree on a funding deal by midnight Monday, the federal government is now closing its doors for the first time in 17 years. In other words, a government shutdown is no longer a matter of if — but for how long.

Federal News Radio readers accurately predicted the government shutdown. More than half of respondents — 58 percent — to Federal News Radio’s online poll last week predicted that the government would shut down today.
