The Senate Judiciary Committee has passed three cybersecurity bills, all dealing with national standards for security breaches involving personal data, NextGov reports.
B the votes followed party lines making it harder to move them to the full Senate for a vote. The three bills require companies to take reasonable steps to secure customers’ personal information and to tell customers if there’s been a breach.
Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), the ranking member of the Judiciary Committee, said the bills would put too much burden on business, leading to job losses. Grassley offered several amendments, including one, which the committee approved, setting minimum prison sentences for hackers.
