Federal employee organizations are quick to remind to members of Congress and the administration that more than 80 percent of the federal workforce works and lives outside of the Washington metropolitan area. The data prove that statement to be correct.
Perhaps by the nature of its size, California is home to the highest number of federal employees, with 152,466. Virginia and the District of Columbia fall second and third, according to a recent report from the Office of Personnel Management.
Ahead of Public Service Recognition Week, the federal community will remind Americans that the employees who serve them are a diverse group of people who live and work throughout the country.
According to the Office of Personnel Management’s vast trove of federal employee data, they’re correct.
More federal employees work in California, for example, than the District of Columbia, Virginia or Maryland.
