Between budget cuts and the continuing resolution, federal agencies are scrambling for every dollar. Yet one potential source of dollars remains elusive. Improper payments amount to hundreds of millions of dollars a year. It is possible to avoid unaccounted-for money from flowing out the door. Some agencies have succeeded. Pat Nigro, director of Deloitte’s Financial Advisory Services, outlined the problem and some possible solutions.
