Gadson first double amputee to command Army garrison

A double amputee has taken the lead as a garrison commander for the first time in history. Col. Gregory Gadson took command yesterday at Fort Belvoir, Va., a garrison of more than 18,000 service members.

Gadson lost his legs when his vehicle struck an improvised explosive device in Iraq in 2007. He has been fitted with technologically advanced prosthetics that allow a more natural gait. Gadson chose to return to active duty. He is also the director of the Army’s Wounded Warrior Program.
