The General Services Administration has a new leader, but not a permanent one.

The Obama administration today named Paul Prouty as the new acting administrator. Prouty, who had been the assistant regional administrator for the Public Buildings Service’s (PBS) Rocky Mountain Region, replaces Jim Williams.

Williams had been acting administrator since August. Williams returns to his role as the commissioner of the Federal Acquisition Service. Tyree Varnado, who was acting FAS Commissioner, also returns to his former role as assistant commissioner for FAS.

One government official familiar with GSA says Prouty is not well-known with GSA and called the choice a little surprising.

The Obama administration has not made clear who some potential GSA administrators could be. Some thought Martha Johnson was a candidate. Johnson was on the transition team and a former GSA chief of staff in the Clinton administration.
