December 17, 2013 — Most everyone knows about the innovations from Bell Labs.
Today’s interview is with Kevin Kelly, CEO of LGS Innovations.
He is an electrical engineer by trade and worked for ten years at Bell Labs. In 2006 they put together wholly owned subsidiary called LGS Innovations.
Kelly talks about how the company is structured—around 700 employees, with major laboratories in New Jersey and Colorado.
About 450 are in the labs working on researching topics like photonics and tactical mobile wireless. The rest of the company applies this learning to practical problems.
In their case, they work only for the federal government.
One challenge that warfighters face is have secure communications in battlefield conditions.
During the interview, Kelly talks about how new research in communications can provide this secure communication.
Right now, LGS Innovations is trying to apply this ability to agencies that need that kind of mobile experience.
For example, the VA has many physicians who need wireless devices that can provide information in a secure manner.
Many of the lessons learned from the battlefield can be applied to the medical world.
