Women of Washington – December 3, 2014

Tiffany Sargent, Internet of Things solutions and systems architect at Intel Corporation, sat down with the Women of Washington radio show to discuss her work on the Internet of Things.

“When we think about the Internet of Things, the simplest way to think of it is as a bunch of connections between computing devices,” Sargent explained to Women of Washington hosts Aileen Black and Gigi Schumm. “All of these embedded devices and computer devices are connected using today’s Internet technology.”

Sargent talked about opportunities for the federal government to use this technology. “When we start thinking about these usage models, what we’re really thinking about is: what different pieces of technology can we append to provide value to the federal government to solve very specific problems?”

Sargent also weighed in on the imbalance between the number of men and women involved in engineering and shared her thoughts on how to get more women into the field.

“Engineering is for all types of women and it’s not about being a nerd,” Sargent told Women of Washington. “It’s about being whoever you want to be, and I think we need to get younger women excited about that.”

Also in this interview, Sargent talked about mentors she’s had over the course of her career and how she transformed her childhood interest in interior design into a degree in industrial engineering.
