On this week's On DoD, some thoughts on the Army drawdown from the Army's chief personnel officer.

On this week’s On DoD, some thoughts on the Army drawdown from the Army’s chief personnel officer. Budget cutbacks and the end of fighting in Afghanistan mean the Army is shrinking to a size of 490,000 soldiers. It’s likely to shrink even further in the coming years, down to between 440,000 and 450,000. Lt. Gen. James McConville is the Army’s deputy chief of staff for personnel. He talked with Jared Serbu about how the Army’s managing the contraction.

Later in the program, we speak with Robert Hale, who served as the DOD comptroller and chief financial officer from the beginning of the Obama administration until his retirement this past July. He’s now a fellow at Booz Allen Hamilton. He talked with Jared about the new job, and some reflections on his time managing DoD’s finances during a particularly tumultuous period.
